The top down mentality
It's recently become very obvious to me that there is a certain similarity in the way that employees behave which reflects the personality of the boss.
When I look at a cross-section of the businesses I deal with, I find that most the employees in a business have similar characteristics.
Take for example, one of our new clients - the boss is pretty easy going, laid back sort of guy, but a hard worker. His staff all seem to reflect this similar attitude, albeit there are a few contrastring personalities in the works, but the vast majority are pleasant, happy go lucky people who are just a joy to work with.
Take as another example, another client who can be a little pushy in the way he requests things. This attitude quite often instantly gets your back up, as he demands, not asks. My team and I are finding that most of his team, from the receptionist up to other members of his administration team, are quite pushy in the way in which they ask for help.
Now, you might argue that the people employed by the boss / employer would reflect a certain personality they want in their business, which will might well be a reflection of their own personality.
It could be that it's actually a combination of these two things. The original personalities of the employees combined with the mindset that the boss displays to his staff which in-turn results in a more unified thought process.
I guess this is why I, as an employer, must take the objective of being a good and positive mentor to my staff very seriously. I want my team to love our clients, just like I want our clients to love us. If I was to go around being an arsehole to others, my staff would believe it to be acceptable for them to do this and follow suit.
